Before he ever wore a bishop’s miter, Bishop René Henry Gracida flew 32 missions in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving first as a tail gunner and then as a flight engineer in the 303rd Air Expeditionary Group during World War II.
During his fourth mission over the Ruhr Valley, his aircraft was hit by flak, caught fire, and lost two engines. As the plane plunged from 25,000 feet toward the earth, the pilot ordered the crew to prepare to bail out. By some miracle, he regained control at treetop level and cancelled the order. A piece of shrapnel struck less than a foot above the bishop’s head. He kept it.
A man who survived Nazi flak over Europe went on to serve God with the same fearless conviction. His message has always been the same.
