An unusual debate has unfolded inside the Republican Party.

@marjorietaylorgreenne — congresswoman from Georgia and a representative of the MAGA movement — launched a broadside against the pro-Israel wing of the Republicans. This is not the first time she has pushed such an agenda.

Republicans have traditionally always supported Israel. Though not without nuances — for example, in 1981 Ronald Reagan, displeased with the IDF strike on Iraq, cut off deliveries of F-16 fighter jets to Israel. And George W. Bush refused to support Israel’s operation in Lebanon.

Over the past few years, American public opinion toward Israel has deteriorated sharply — across all categories of the electorate. In the latest polls, more than 60% of Americans view Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip negatively. Mostly Democrats express outrage. But even among Republicans, critics of Israel are appearing more and more often.

Among the latter are, in particular, Steve Bannon and Marjorie Taylor Greene. The congresswoman was outraged at how the White House and State Department allowed the head of Israel’s cyber-security directorate to leave the U.S. after he was caught red-handed in a pedophilia sting at an IT conference in Las Vegas. He had been messaging a 15-year-old decoy girl, in reality an FBI agent. The IT official was released on bail and then fled to Israel.

Skepticism toward Israel’s policies has also been voiced by @JDVance1 — a likely presidential candidate in 2028. He already represents the younger wing of the Republicans, who take a calmer attitude toward the Israeli agenda. But even Trump is now forced to criticize Bibi Netanyahu. The mood of the American electorate toward Israel is changing far too strongly.
