Member Agencies of the Intelligence Community

The United States Intelligence Community (IC) consists of 18 agencies and organizations that work to support U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.

These include independent agencies, Department of Defense (DoD) elements, and intelligence offices within other federal departments:

Independent Agencies:

  • Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)

  • Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)

Department of Defense Elements

  • Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA)

  • National Security Agency (NSA)

  • National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA)

  • National Reconnaissance Office (NRO)

  • Intelligence elements of the U.S. Army

  • Intelligence elements of the U.S. Navy

  • Intelligence elements of the U.S. Air Force

  • Intelligence elements of the U.S. Marine Corps

  • Intelligence elements of the U.S. Space Force

Other Executive Departments and Agencies:

  • Department of Energy

  • Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence

  • Department of Homeland Security

  • Office of Intelligence and Analysis

  • U.S. Coast Guard Intelligence

  • Department of Justice

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) - Intelligence Branch

  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) - Office of National Security Intelligence

  • Department of State

  • Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR)

  • Department of the Treasury

  • Office of Intelligence and Analysis

Employee Numbers:

  • Total Employees (Estimated): As of various public reports, the U.S. Intelligence Community was estimated to have approximately 854,000 people holding top-secret clearances working for both government and private contractors in the broader intelligence-related workforce.

  • Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA): Over 16,500 employees worldwide.

  • Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI): About 1,750 employees.

Other agencies' specific employee counts are generally classified or not regularly disclosed.

The total number across all agencies is often referenced as being in the hundreds of thousands, but most of these are not direct employees of the 18 core agencies, they include a wide range of cleared personnel supporting intelligence operations nationally and globally.
