As raging floodwaters trapped his fiancée, children, and mother-in-law in their mobile home near the Guadalupe River, Julian did what heroes do—he fought to save them. In the darkness of early Friday morning, he shattered a window to get his loved ones and their pets to the roof. In doing so, he suffered a fatal injury to his arm and bled out before help could arrive.
His final words to his sister were filled with love and fear.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“I’m scared,” she told him.
“Me too,” he replied.
That was the last time anyone heard his voice.
