“They Signed Knowing They Could Hang”

by R.D. Halden

They weren’t polished.

They weren’t perfect.

They were farmers, printers, blacksmiths, lawyers—

men with calluses on their hands

and enemies at their heels.

They didn’t toast freedom in daylight.

They plotted it in shadows,

risked their land, their families,

their necks.

Every signature on that parchment

was a gamble against the gallows.

They signed not in ink alone,

but in conviction, smoke, and blood.

The Fourth of July isn’t fireworks.

It’s a war drum.

A line drawn in the dirt.

A reminder that liberty never came cheap

and never stays without a fight.

They weren’t united by comfort.

They were bound by one thing:

the belief that no crown, no tyrant,

no distant hand should govern free men.

So when we stand on this soil

and raise our flags,

we don’t salute the flag for its colors—

we honor the cost stitched into every thread. https://truthsocial.com/@RDHalden/114794855214914721
