The words "capitol" and "capital" are often confused due to their similar pronunciation and spelling, but they have distinct meanings. "Capital" has a wide range of meanings, including a city that serves as the seat of government, money or assets, uppercase letters, and something of great importance.

For example, "Washington, D.C., is the capital of the United States".

On the other hand, "capitol" specifically refers to a building where a legislature meets. The most well-known example is the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., where the U.S. Congress convenes.

The term "capitol" can also refer to the area surrounding the building, such as Capitol Hill.

To distinguish between the two, consider whether you are referring to a specific building or the area around it. If so, use "capitol." In all other cases, use "capital".
